Job Description:

The position is in the Architect of the Capitol, House Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent, Facilities Operations Division, Mechanical Systems Branch. The incumbent serves as an Insulating Worker performing routine tasks, and assisting journey-level Insulators with assignments. The position will require the completion of confined space and asbestos abatement trainings.

You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT required for this position: Ability to perform general helper level insulating support tasks and without more than normal supervision. The tour of duty for this position is Monday - Friday 2:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m. Duties are stated at the WG-08 level. If selected at the WG-05 level, candidate will have non-competitive promotion potential to the WG-8 level. Duties include, but are not limited to: Install a variety of insulating materials such as fiberglass, magnesia, asbestos, and unicellular foam on the regular shaped surfaces of pipes, tanks, boilers, ducts, and other structures which have predominantly straight runs or surfaces and regular curves. Install insulation to reduce heat loss or absorption, prevent moisture condensation, or reduce sound levels. Measure, cut, trim, and fit insulating materials in accordance with detailed oral or written procedures and the use of such trade tools and equipment as knives, rasps, scissors and palms to cut, form, and install the materials. Remove, repair, enclose, and encapsulate asbestos insulation and other asbestos building products. Mix asbestos cements, mastics or plastics and apply them with trowel. Make paper patterns as necessary, cutting insulating material and sewing parts together. Install, modify, and repair new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation and hydraulic systems; steam generators; flash and expansion tanks; and condensate, vacuum and circulating pumps and radiators. Handle and/or removal of friable and non-friable asbestos. Performs other related duties as assigned.
