You will serve as a a TOOLMAKER in the MECHANICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD. TEMPORARY PROMOTION NOT TO EXCEED 2 YEARS AND MAY BECOME PERMANENT WITHOUT FURTHER COMPETITION

Applying advanced shop mathematics and formulas to determine dimensions and geometries. Designing and/or manufacturing components from various types of materials, using a range of manufacturing methods. Reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, Production Engineering Memos (PEM), and other technical specifications. You will set up and operate all conventional machine tools and attachments.
You will apply the principles and methods of the Toolmaking trade to layout, select tools, grinding wheels speeds and feeds, and machining operations.
You will design, repair or manufacture jigs, fixtures, simple or progressive dies, hobs, drills, reamers and various other tooling devices.
You will perform bench work such as filing, scraping, grinding, and lapping to finish and assemble items.
You will repair micrometers, Vernier calipers, height gages, flat contour gages, threaded work plug-set plug-ring gages, torque wrenches, dial indicators, local laboratory standards, and optical comparators.
