To qualify, you must have one of the following: Specialized Experience: Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level or higher in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying experience are: 1) staff a visitor center or information desk providing information and orientation to visitors; 2) perform front or backcountry patrols in a park or natural area to educate visitors and protect resources; 3) observe and document resource issues in a park or recreation area ( e.g. wildlife observations, backcountry conditions, resource damage, etc.); or 4) construct and/or repair trails and/or buildings in remote parks or recreation areas. -OR- Education: Have successfully completed at least one year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in a related field such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavior sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. -OR- Superior Academic Achievement: Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads weighing 50 pounds or more for extended distances over rough terrain. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
Conduct maintenance of four campgrounds and 15 waysides to include vault toilets, fee station shelters, picnic tables, and other structures.
Provide a unique recreational experience for visitors by leading tours, presenting interpretive programs, and advising visitors on safety procedures, fire prevention, amenities available, and authorized use of recreation facilities.
Operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle with an attached trailer. Operate 4 wheel drive off-road-vehicles (ATVs). Load and secure vehicles and equipment on trailers.
Develop educational and interpretive programs and materials such as pamphlets, exhibits, signs, and handouts.
Use hand tools for minor maintenance; trimmers, lawn mowers, and pruners for grounds maintenance; pick up trash; shovel out fire grates; and paint small structures.
