NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039-hour season. This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season(s) reflected in this announcement. See the Additional Information section for details. The typical season for this position is April - September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is April 2026.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required. Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties. -AND- To be eligible your application package must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration. The area of consideration can be found in the below paragraphs. Areas considered "near" Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park are the Municipality of Skagway Borough, which includes the communities of Skagway, Dyea, Haines, Klukwan, Gustavus, and Juneau. -ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position. Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Knowledge of common equipment and tool associated with the job duty trades. Including assembly, installation, repair, and maintenance. Knowledge of Materials, Systems and Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) associated with the job duty trades. Ability to use a variety of measuring instruments and ability to calculate square footage, linear feet, board feet, etc. for the purpose. Ability to Interpret Instructions, specifications, etc. and effectively communicate them to coworkers. (includes blueprint reading) Ability to research, understand, develop, and present safety information as it relates to work practices and tool use from published documents such as Safety Data Sheets, Product/Equipment Manuals and Occupational Health and Safety Association regulations. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to supervisors and coworkers for the purpose of understanding work assignments, creating completion reports, and communicating concerns.
Duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following: Primary Duties for this position include Carpentry, Roofing and Painting. Performs all tasks related to repair and/or replacement of damaged or degraded sections of roofing, siding, and window components for both modern and historic buildings according to the Secretary of Interior Preservation Standards. Work may include Masonry and installation of trim and finishes in historic structures. Performs all tasks related to the preparation and completion of painting projects on interior and exterior finishes for both modern and historic buildings according to the Secretary of Interior Preservation Standards. Performs tasks related to repair and/or replacement of damaged or degraded components of brick or stonework, such as chimneys, for historic buildings according to the Secretary of Interior Preservation Standards.
