Serves as Aviation Safety Inspector (General Aviation Maintenance) performing Agency mission-critical assignments to assure that organizations and air carriers adhere to applicable Federal Aviation safety regulations.
General Requirements for All Positions: Not more than two separate incidents involving Federal aviation regulations violations in the last 5 years; Valid State driver's license; Fluency in the English language; No chemical dependencies or drug abuse that could interfere with job performance; and High school diploma or equivalent. Medical Requirements for All Positions: Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of the Aviation Safety Inspector position in a safe and efficient manner and must meet all of the following requirements. Have good distant vision in each eye and be able to read, without strain, printed materials the size of typewritten characters (glasses and contact lenses permitted); Have the ability to hear the conversational voice (hearing aid permitted); and Not have any physical condition that would cause them to be a hazard to themselves or others that would interfere with their ability to fly as passengers in a variety of aircraft. In addition, applicants for positions that require participation in the operation of the aircraft must: Possess a valid second–class medical certificate in accordance with FAA regulations; and Pass recurrent medical examinations as prescribed by the FAA. Applicants not requiring valid second-class medical certificates who are tentatively selected will be required to: Provide documentation from a board-certified physician certifying that they meet the minimal medical requirements; or Individuals who do not meet the minimum medical requirements but who are otherwise qualified will receive an individualized assessment to determine whether they can perform the essential functions of the position. Specialized Experience: Recency of specialized experience is waived for current and former FAA employees in the 1825 series. When the predominant work involves general aviation maintenance, applicants for Aviation Safety Inspector (Airworthiness) positions must meet all of the following requirements. Experience involving the maintenance and repair of airframes, power plants, and aircraft systems with responsibility for certifying airworthiness. Maintenance experience with aircraft 12,500 pounds or less maximum certificated takeoff weight. Aircraft maintenance experience in a repair station; air carrier or airline repair facility; military repair facility; or local, state or Federal governmental agency. Aircraft maintenance work experience within the last 3 years. FAA Mechanic Certificate with airframe and power plant ratings. To qualify for this position you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I, FG/GS-13 level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as: Assisting, conducting or performing various technical functions related to certification, surveillance, investigation and compliance recommendation of operational activities for FAR Part 135 air carriers/air operators; experience monitoring and evaluating programs for compliance with regulations and standards. In-grade/downgrade application packages will be accepted.
The incumbent applies comprehensive technical knowledge and authoritative technical expertise for matters applicable to operators, aircraft and/or airmen. The incumbent will be responsible for matters as it pertains to evaluations, inspections, and reinspections of any certificate holder entity. Incumbent performs assignments that are of such breadth, diversity, and intensity that they involve numerous complex features to assure that organizations and air carriers meet applicable Federal Aviation safety regulations. Interprets, audits, evaluates, and analyzes practices of business operations related to aviation systems and operators. Incumbent works directly and maintains access to highly sensitive, confidential sensitive data that may affect national security and/or law enforcement activities; and therefore, will be required to protect and maintain the confidentiality in those actions. Incumbent will provide technical flight standards information in support of law enforcement agencies and joint activities associated with these entities. Incumbent has a thorough understanding of matters relating to standard airworthiness certificates and aircraft registration, and maintains knowledge of international standards as it relates to the national and global air space. Incumbent prepares and writes highly detailed technical reports, briefing papers, presentations, and/or communications relating to aviation interests, compliance, and/or investigative activities. Incumbent plans and directs use of time and resources to accomplish a variety of sensitive investigative activities. Incumbent investigates a wide range of violations and as such, plans, coordinates, gathers, obtains evidence, and prepares enforcement case files for the prosecution of violators of Federal Aviation Regulations. Incumbent will be called to testify as a subject matter expert in matters involving safety violations in any administrative, civil and/or criminal court. Contacts are internal to the agency and external with stakeholders. Incumbent represents the FAA as a principal technical inspector as the point of contact on projects, programs, and/or other work activities. Lead teams of diverse, cross-functional subject matter experts. Coordinates significant technical matters with representative internally and externally. Ensures coordination with appropriate stakeholders. Utilizes a wide-range of automation tools to perform duties and investigative activities. Applies a comprehensive knowledge of the appropriate specialization and a broad knowledge of the Aviation Safety (AVS) mission and goals to assigned programs and areas of responsibility. Performs other duties as assigned.
