This position is located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, in the Facilities Division. For the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority: You must live within 75 miles of Hawaii County, HI to qualify for this position. You must upload proof that your home is inside this 75-mile radius. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Have the ability to do the work of a Laborer (Motor Vehicle Operating) without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) Work experience that includes the following tasks: have used a wide variety of light hand and power tools (mowers, shovels, rakes, lawn edging equipment, blowers) Operate heavy power equipment such as chainsaws, lawnmowers, string trimmers, weed whackers, brush cutters, chippers, etc. to clear brush and maintain grounds and roads. Experience driving and towing equipment over federal, state, and county roads in all weather conditions. Maintain road barriers, dug ditches, shovel dirt and asphalt, loaded/unloads heavy supplies, organize and clean work area, keep vehicles, trailers, and equipment clean and operable; perform general landscaping. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. The Pacific West Region is hiring TEMPORARY Summer seasonal positions for Summer 2026 (up to 1560 hours per service year). Appointment dates are April through October, but vary based on funding, weather, projects, and visitor needs. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. Duty Locations/Parks: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park - Hawaii Major Duties: Operates and maintains hand and power tools (e.g. mowers, shovels, rakes, lawn edging equipment, blowers, etc.) to maintain buildings, grounds, and roads. Load and unload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. Dig ditches, clean gutters, shovel snow. Maintain lawns and grounds. Performs duties such as custodial, maintenance, and groundwork as needed. Transport people or materials in a motor vehicle to and from destinations within the park. Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 - 100 pounds (or more) with assistance. Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
